Fitness Wannabe or Content Couch Potato?

walkingfeetThere are 3 types of people, I’ve decided.  Exercise fanatics; active people who move their bodies on a regular basis, through regular walks, hikes, yoga, etc.; and couch potatoes.  I suppose I’ve been all three at various times in my life – but right now, I am definitely in group number 3.  I’m not happy about it – but am I concerned enough to make a change?  My best friend hopes so, which is why she sent me the exercise plan too easy to ignore.  Or so she thinks.

Oh, just like other diligent couch potatoes, I’ve got my excuses.  It is winter. Hibernation season.  It’s cold, often even rainy, outside.  I’ve been trying to be good about spending money as we get through Christmas and save for what I’m calling my Trip of a Lifetime (Europe 2010).

If money were unlimited (I love to play that game sometimes) I would join a Pilates studio and do Pilates several times …

Ringing out the Old, Ringing in the New

goalsI love this time of year.  I love reflecting over the past, thinking about what I accomplished – and what I did not.  Was the year all I wanted it to be – all I had hoped it would be?  What worked, what didn’t, and what can I use from all that as I sit here thinking of what I want the year AHEAD to be.  Call them resolutions (or not – as some people have a adverse reaction to that word).  Say they are goals, a roadmap, or a plan.  Just don’t miss out on this opportunity to make sure you are creating the life you want, you REALLY want, to lead.

This year is particularly fun, because not only can you look back for the past year, you can look back at the past decade.  Think of where you were back in the year 2000.  Then think of all that has happened in your life.  Perhaps you …

Fabulous Thing for Pet Owners

On top of recovering from a nasty bout with the swine flu, we had to take my beloved 14-year old dog to the vet yesterday.  Because of course, when it rains, it pours.  She had grown what looked like another black pad on the underneath side of her paw.  It really didn’t look abnormal, until you looked at her other front paw and saw that the other one didn’t have this extra part.  Still, we disregarded it, dealing with our own sickness and all the other things that come up in life – until Life said:  Enough!  Pay attention! The blood spots all over the hardwood floors and white carpet were much harder to ignore, so off to the vet we went.

We left the vet with stitches her in front paw where they surgically removed the growth and a pill bottle of antibiotics with instructions:  2 big horse pills to be given in the morning …

Aren’t You Glad?

Our food order got screwed up. It happens, right? We all got what we ordered except for my son – who received grilled cheese instead of the kids’ cheese pizza he had requested. Yes, it happens to all of us at one time or another. And like the famous saying about life, “it isn’t what happens to you, it is how you HANDLE it that counts.”

As soon as the food was delivered, my son immediately spoke up. He politely informed the waitress that he had ordered the cheese pizza. She agreed he had, apologized, and went back to the kitchen. Time ticked by. My husband got grumpy. We started feeding my son some of our French fries (ironic because I had told him he would have to order fruit or vegetables as his side, not the beloved steak fries. I had assured him we would share some of our fries with him, but had NO idea it would end …

Time to Paint

Two minutes to cover the table in newspaper.  1 minute to get paints, brushes, and paper out of the art drawer.  30 seconds to get old oversized t-shirts on my daughter and myself.  Altogether less than 5 minutes to make my daughter’s wish for a fun afternoon come true.  So why was this the first time I had pulled the paints out in years??!

When my son was little, I did the whole painting thing – like most first time Moms do – only outside of course.  But somewhere along the way, we went through a hectic phase (maybe due to their ages – I don’t remember) and also moved where to it wasn’t so weather-perfect all the time, and that’s when I must have decided painting could be an AT school activity.

My son’s preschool art portfolio is FILLED with wonderful paintings that he did at preschool.  Big, lovely, abstract works that fill the whole sheet of paper.  My …

My Secret Summer Savior: BINGO

BINGOchartSummer is just about here and I’m a little nervous.  I always start off with good intentions.  I say it will be a time to relax, to ease up on schedules, to just BE for a while.  But about halfway through, this Zen Mama Wannabe starts LOSING MY MIND.  The bickering, the begging for more screen time, the moaning about having to run errands, the longing for just a hour or so of time for ME – just to be able to think and have some quiet.  (This is why other parents sign their kids up for camps all summer – I get it.  I do).  So, here I sit – wondering how the heck it will go and if it can live up to my initial expectations?  (I wonder, does anything ever?)

Getting Back in the Saddle – Again

It has happened to all of us at one time or another.  We’ve been working hard on doing something on a regular basis, sticking with it, making it part of our routine – and then WHAM! – “It” happens (whatever “it” is that throws us off course) and suddenly we find ourselves back at square one.  Having to start all over – again.  AGH!  It is enough to make you want to give up right then and there.  So, what do you do?  When it has happened to you, how did you (or did you) get back up in the saddle again?

We usually think of this happening with exercise plans or diets we start, but it is really true with ANY goal we are working toward.  We work so hard at following the plan (1,200 calories a day; 5 work outs a week; whatever it is).  Perhaps we even start seeing some results.  We are feeling motivated.  Things are

Don’t Eat the Lo Mein!

Way back when, during our single days, my husband and I had a date at this local, upscale Chinese restaurant.  Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, it was a place we didn’t frequent THAT often, and I was excited to go – not only for the food, but also to enjoy the company of the dreamy guy seated across from me.  We laughed and talked (they used to call this flirting) sipping on our drinks until our food arrived: 2 yummy dishes to share (does it get much better than this??)

Funny what you can learn dining with a person, isn’t it?  My husband had this way of eating one thing and THEN eating the next.  He didn’t like mixing it up too much.  I, on the other hand, liked to take a bite of this, and a taste of that, and then back to the first, etc.  (Really summed up our personalities, I think, at least back then).  He started …

Making a List – Checking it Twice

Want to learn more about my magic?  Last week, I mentioned a magic potion to combat fear, but this works all the time — in the good times and the bad.  Any time.  Easy breezy to do – AND again, it works.  What are you waiting for?  Ready to give it a try?

Think of something you want.  A romantic partner, a new job, a new place to live (the possibilities are endless).  Write it down.  Then write down all the details.  What qualities does your ideal partner have?  What does this new job look like?  What would you need to be doing to have it be exactly the type of work you want?   Write down each thing.
